Expected results

Cotton cultivation in Greece is one of the most dynamic crops. According to ELSTAT (2016), in recent years around 2.5 million strémmata have been cultivated, which contributed to making cotton the country’s most important industrial crop with a production of 739 thousand tons. All of the above make the cultivation of cotton extremely important for the economic development of the country. In this context, the use of the system mainly by large cooperative production schemes will give greater dynamics to the cotton farming sector.

In particular, it will bring about an improvement in economic performance, aiming to increase the commercial profit of the harvested product by gradually increasing the degree of standardization of the product in the field and not in the gin. It will also enable the producer/cooperative scheme to group large quantities of harvested product with similar quality characteristics, by variety and by harvest area, and to classify the product by variety in order to facilitate the interface between sellers and buyers.

It will also be able to sell the final product when and where it decides, thereby increasing its bargaining power in terms of the final sale price, while facilitating commercial transactions through a common commercial language. The disposal of the harvested product will be based on specific quality specifications from the field increasing the added value of the product. Finally, the use of this system will strengthen the bargaining power of large cooperative schemes to achieve a better selling price of the final product.
